ABOUT WORK

rapid loading (2022) is a series of concrete sculptures that reference the form of a cushion. Here, the pattern of upholstering is transposed into concrete: impressions of padded furniture are cast as dense, weight-bearing forms. By combining the casted form with elements that would typically remain concealed within a building, what is hidden as support becomes exposed as surface.

Though the forms repeat, each carries distinct colour variations. Metal oxides introduced into the concrete react differently during casting, producing these surface differences. These same oxides are found in liquefied soil after seismic events, drawing a material parallel between the domestic and the geological, where concrete serves both as a tool for shaping human environments and as a material shaped by natural forces.
